Thyroid disorders

Thyroid disorders are conditions that affect the thyroid gland, and can range from a small, harmless goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) that needs no treatment to life-threatening cancer.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of thyroid disorders such as over production or deficient production of thyroid hormones mainly. The constitutional remedies will stimulate the body to reactivate thyroid secretions and restore adequate hormone levels, reversing the signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. While the conventional treatment is depended on lifelong synthetic hormone therapy, the homeopathic medicines can be withdrawn, once the normalcy is attained after the treatment with homeopathic medicines.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck.

It's one of the most important glands in the body that regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body, including how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats.

According to research estimates, almost 30-35 per cent of women belonging to younger age group are affected with thyroid today.

There are specific kinds of thyroid disorders that include:

  • Goiters - Enlarged gland can be due to underactive or overactive thyroid gland.

  • Graves' Disease - An autoimmune disease that leads to a generalized over activity of the thyroid gland and it is one of the common causes of hyperthyroidism.

  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - In this autoimmune disorder, the body attacks thyroid tissue that leads to an underactive thyroid gland. One of the causes of hypo thyroidism.

  • Hyperthyroidism - Due to an overproduction of thyroid hormones. Symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism can include tremor, nervousness, fast heart rate, fatigue, intolerance for heat, increase in bowel movements, increased sweating, concentration problems, unintentional weight loss.

  • Hypothyroidism - Results from the thyroid gland producing an insufficient amount of thyroid hormone. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, depression, mild weight gain, cold intolerance, sleepiness, and constipation. Other symptoms can include dry and coarse hair, dry skin, and muscle cramps. Blood cholesterol levels may be elevated.

  • Thyroid Cancer

  • Thyroid Nodules - Lumps in the thyroid gland.

To diagnose thyroid diseases, along with medical history and physical exam, thyroid tests such as TSH, T3, T4, FREE T3, FREE T, ultrasonography, thyroid scan and biopsy are used.
